Evan is babbling up a storm these days. Mostly it's just that.....babble but occasionally he repeats a word enough that I believe he has the grasp of what it means. Unfortunately "Mama" isn't one of those words. Yesterday I was practicing it with him. I said "Mama" to which he replied "Dada" and then gave me a big smile.
Doh!
We decided to try sleep training again. I admit that we are pushovers when it comes to Evan crying, therefore, our last few efforts at getting him to sleep through the night in his own crib have not had the best results. Basically we would do really well until about 3 am and then we would give in & go back to square one. Dewey has a theory that it has alot to do with the fact that Evan is my own personal teddy bear & that I don't really WANT him to sleep in his own bed. I can not confirm or deny this theory (well, I could, but really....we all know the truth). Another issue was that Evan LOVES his soother (pacifier) but he can't really find it in the night & stick it back in his mouth. Even if it is pinned to him, he would rather yell and let you come fix it. So for the last 24 hours we have been soother-less. It's been hard. Evan really likes his soother & I like it too. He can be fussy & I stick it in his mouth and it's all better. Now.....well he just fusses. I know it's better in the long run but I'm still not sure I'm happy about it. Oh well, hopefully it will get better.
Last night Evan spent the entire night in his crib but woke quite a few times. We managed to stay strong & not "rescue" him. Hopefully tonight will be a bit better with fewer wakings (or at least less crying).

Today was a very busy day. Evan and I got to have lunch with Dewey and a Dave (a coworker of ours). Evan and I don't have lunch with Daddy very often so it was quite a treat. Then we got to go visit our favorite family doc, Dr. Harris. This appointment was for me (Evan gets to go on Thursday). I've been having some problems with my eyesight that has me a bit worried. She didn't seem overly worried about it but is going to refer me to an opthamologist. If you know me very well, you know that I am blind as a bat. That's bad enough by itself but it also opens you up to a host of other possible problems such as detached retinas and the like. Keep your fingers crossed that it's something way more minor than that!
After our appointment, we headed to the office & I had a meeting with my boss. We're starting to discuss my return to work. Wow, the last 9 months has FLOWN by! My year of maternity leave is over on June 15th. While I'm kind of excited about going back to work, I am very conflicted about going back & leaving Evan. I know he will be fine but I will miss him so much. I hope it doesn't change how he is with me. He's such a mama's boy now & loves to cuddle with me. I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing & he will still love me. :)
Evan then headed home with Dewey for a "Daddy Night" as I had a charity outing tonight. One of my friends, Jody, decided that all of us "ladies of leisure" (stay at home moms) should try to do one charity thing per month. Last month we volunteered at a retirement lodge & this month we stuffed volunteer folders for the Cancer Society. It was a long 4 hours of sticking stickers on folders but we had fun. Now I'm just about ready for bed.
One more thing....please send good thoughts to my foster sister, Mechelle. She was diagnosed with colon cancer 6 years ago & was cancer free until last month. It has now come back in her lungs. I truly belive in the power of positive thinking/prayer so please think of her & hope she gets well. Thanks. :)
Arrange sausage slices in a deep non-stick skillet. Place over medium heat and cook 5 to 7 minutes, turning over once, until lightly browned on both sides. Remove from pan and pour off most of the fat (leave just a thin film in pan).
Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook, stiring, until softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the chicken broth, tomatoes, sliced pepper and tumeric, and mix well. Stir in the rice bring to a boil, then stir again to mix.
Return the sausage slices to the pan, arranging them evenly on the top of the rice mixture, then immediately reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook without stirring for 20 minutes or until the rice is almost tender. Sprinkle the peas overtop & replace the lid. Continue cooking for another 5 to 8 minutes or until the rice is completely done. Remove from heat and let sit for 5 minutes before serving to allow any excess liquid to be absorbed.
Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.
Makes 4 servings
Recipe Notes: I used fresh tomatoes b/c I had them. I also used Spolumbo's Hot Italian sausage (a local Calgary brand of fresh sausage) so I couldn't really get 1/2 inch slices. The sausage tasted great but wasn't as pretty as the pic in the magazine. I didn't have parsley so I didn't use it. Didn't really miss it. This recipe was so good that we ate the leftovers the next night. Definitely worth a try!

Read more...Evan is in LOVE with Gracy (our cat). Every time she comes anywhere near him, he reaches for her & says "Ki Ki". Gracy has been pretty deprived in the love department since Evan came along so she is quite happy to get the attention. She sits quietly & patiently while Evan mauls her when she is within reach. I try to keep him from being too mean but occasionally he comes back with a handful of fur. I have now been upstaged by the cat!

Evan and I are back in Alabama. We decided to fly back with my mom to visit. I will be back posting as soon as we get back since blogging on mom's dial up connection is NOT FUN! :)
