To Tweet or Not to Tweet....That is the Question!

I've been away all week at a technical conference for my work. I work in a technology industry that is very forward thinking in some ways while also being very conservative. Over the last few years there have been more and more conversations around social media and how it might work for business.
I love hearing the different views....on one end of the spectrum there are people like me who blog/tweet/facebook and on the other end of the spectrum there are people who would NEVER post a picture of themselves or their children on the internet. Lots of new people were introduced to Twitter through a Twitter station at the conference where the introduced people to Twitter and got them signed up. I even got a super cool twitter pin!
Several parts of our company have developed user forums and we have several prolific bloggers/tweeters. While I am a total believer in social media, I find myself questioning getting involved with social media in a work setting. I have an intrinsic fear of being reprimanded or ....heaven forbid!....fired because of something I say on social media. Now those of you who read my blog know that I am very averse to posting anything that people might find offensive. I err on the side of caution because I am very vocal with my friends/coworkers about my blog. This caution sometimes keeps me from blogging things that I am very passionate about which kinda makes me sad.
Even with my cautious attitude, though, I wonder if the company I work for would think I'm as cautious as I should be. It's something I'm going to explore further in the next few months. I signed up for an additional "work" twitter account for myself (mostly to save my current followers from process control talk). We'll see if I can figure out a way to bring "work" value to the twittersphere while remaining gainfully employed.
So what do you think? If you work outside the home, do you tweet about work? Do you worry about perception, etc? I would love to hear you views.
